Deadline: 03.05.2024
Festivals of the independent performing arts are regarded as motors of innovation for artistic positions and aesthetic practices. But they also offer important potential for networking, for getting to know new places and regions, stages and protagonists – outside of one’s own local or regional work environment.
With the format &FRIENDS VISIT, together with the FESTIVALFRIENDS network we invite artists to our festival. The invited artists get to know the programme and the festival team - accompanied by a networking programme specifically tailored to this format. Over five days (including the arrival and departure days), visitors will be able to attend the varied program, and we also want to give them the opportunity to exchange ideas with the regional scene.
APPLICATION:
● TARGET GROUP: All freelance artists and cultural workers in the performing arts based in Germany are addressed.
● TIME PERIOD: 5. bis 9. Juni 2024
● LOCATION: Hamburg
● LANGUAGE: The programme items of the networking format are offered in German
and English.
● CONTENT: We ask for a short biography (max. 1 page) and an explanation (up to 1.500 characters) of why participation in the &FRIENDS BESUCH format is important for your own work. If you have already participated in one of our formats, please include a short note in your application. Applications can be submitted in German or English.
● CONTACT/DEADLINE: You can submit your application as a collected PDF by e-mail to koordination@hauptsachefrei.de by 03.05.2024.
● TRAVEL EXPENSES/ALLOWANCE: FESTIVALFRIENDS will cover the travel and accommodation costs of all invited artists. An expense allowance of 450,00 EUR per person will be paid.
FESTIVALFRIENDS is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media through the program Verbindungen fördern of the Bundesverband Freie Darstellende Künste e. V. (Federal Association of Independent Performing Arts).

Ksenia Ravvina and Alexandar Hadjiev are thrilled to take on the artistic direction of the festival for the years 2024 to 2026. Empowered by their extensive experience in the international interdisciplinary performance and theater field, as well as their commitment to fostering cultural education, they are prepared to embark on a new chapter for the Hauptsache Frei Festival.
A fantastic festival team comes together, and the goals for the upcoming editions are clearly outlined: to strengthen the Hamburg arts scene and its actors, to nurture artistic diversity, to highlight accessibility and inclusion at all levels, to extend a warm welcome to our valued audience and to ignite international artistic exchanges.
Save the date: 05. - 09. Juni 2024, and bottoms up to the 10th anniversary of the festival!

Hauptsache Frei is the festival of Hamburg's independent performing arts. Founded in 2015, the festival provides a platform for the artists of Hamburg's independent scene and invites professionals of the scene from all over Germany to Hamburg for exchange and networking. Concentrated on one week, the festival becomes a platform for artistic productions, contemporary trends, aesthetic innovations, socio-political discourses and scientific impulses. Hauptsache Frei is supported by the Bündnis für Festivals der Freien Tanz- und Theaterschaffenden Hamburgs e.V., a sponsoring association consisting of various institutions - venues but also interest groups such as DfdK Hamburg e.V. - in the city.
The Hauptsache Frei festival is a member of the FESTIVALFRIENDS network, an association of regional festivals of the independent performing arts in Germany. FESTIVALFRIENDS is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media through the program "Promoting Connections" of the Bundesverband Freie Darstellende Künste e. V. (Federal Association of the Liberal Performing Arts).
