WORKSHOP: Going Beyond – Theater in digitalen Realitäten

Workshop on performing online run by Gloria Schulz and Alla Popp

Mon, August 23, 2021

Lichthof Theater, Mendelssohnstraße 15, 22761 Hamburg

Have you been wanting to turn the web and virtual spaces into your stage, even before the pandemic? Don’t know where to start? Then join the workshop with digitally advanced performance-, theater- and media artists Gloria Schulz and Alla Popp and get to know practical tools and central artistic approaches of the performance net art!

What will happen during the workshop?

The four-day workshop will offer you insights into the practical work with different digital tools, as well as delve into artistic questions of what digital spaces entail – questions that have been debated in the net art community for a long time.
Together, we will go on a virtual expedition through worldwide networked, freely accessible digital stages and spaces. In which form are they used and which aesthetics, narratives and references do we find written in them? We are looking for our digital performer self, questioning our performing body and its relationship to digital space and its avatar. When do digital and analog bodies and presences merge? What role do liveness, immersion and presence play beyond classical stage arrangements, performer and audience roles, or divisions between analog and digital worlds?

The workshop teaches practical methods and tools for artistic work with the social VR platform Mozilla Hubs and gives support so that you can create your own worlds in VR. We will experiment with photogrammetry, avatars and forms of interaction, as well as other digital tools to make our own digital stages. Your mentors will actively guide you in developing your first artistic experiments in a VR environment.
The project prototypes created during the workshop may be presented during Hauptsache Frei – Festival der Darstellenden Künste Hamburg 2021.

Schedule:

23.08.: Introduction & expedition: hacking & appropriation of digital worlds, media art references, aesthetics, narratives & discourses.
24.–25.08.: Division into two groups for deeper exploration of: A) digital worlds & spaces and B) digital performance bodies. Work with different tools & methods. Develop own project approaches.
26.08.: Finalization of prototypes, possibly presentation or showing in the context of Hauptsache Frei 2021.

Requirements for participation:

Applications are open to artists:

  • who have an openness to new questions & methods, an interest in practical work with technology and a willingness to work in a team and share knowledge.
  • who can participate in the workshop in Hamburg on 23-26.08.2021 in person. The workshop will take place on-site and not online. The number of participants is limited and will be finalized two weeks before the start. At the current time, a small group is expected. Additional places may be offered as back-up spots, depending on current infection rates.
  • who can bring their own computer. If you need support to do so, or do not have your own computer, this does not exclude you from participating. Please contact us at jeanne.charlotte.vogt@hauptsachefrei.de.
